Lipschitz condition
Definition
Let be a subset of , let be a function, and let be a real number. The function satisfies a Lipschitz condition on with constant , or is -Lipschitz on , if Let and . The function is Lipschitz in on with constant if whenever .
Remarks
A -Lipschitz function is uniformly continuous. A differentiable function on a convex set with at each point is -Lipschitz, by the mean value inequality. For example, is -Lipschitz on . The function is continuous but not Lipschitz on any interval that contains . The non-uniqueness example uses a function of this kind. The Picard–Lindelöf theorem needs a Lipschitz condition in .
Explanations
L1 human
A Lipschitz function cannot change faster than a fixed rate. The slope of each chord of its graph is at most in absolute value.
What this node needs for W2
- edge instance_of in: one example (0 of 1)
- edge not_instance_of in: one non-example that fails one clause (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.
