statement theorem

Solutions for distinct real roots

Statement

Let a0,…,an−1a_0, \dots, a_{n-1} be real numbers, and suppose that the characteristic polynomial p(r)=rn+an−1rn−1+⋯+a0p(r) = r^n + a_{n-1} r^{n-1} + \dots + a_0 has nn distinct real roots r1,…,rnr_1, \dots, r_n. Then (er1x,…,ernx)\left(e^{r_1 x}, \dots, e^{r_n x}\right) is a fundamental system of the equation y(n)+an−1y(n−1)+⋯+a0y=0y^{(n)} + a_{n-1} y^{(n-1)} + \dots + a_0 y = 0 on R\mathbb{R}. So the solutions are exactly the functions y=c1er1x+⋯+cnernxy = c_1 e^{r_1 x} + \dots + c_n e^{r_n x} with real constants c1,…,cnc_1, \dots, c_n.

Remarks

Each erkxe^{r_k x} is a solution because p(rk)=0p(r_k) = 0. The Wronskian at 00 is the Vandermonde determinant ∏j<k(rk−rj)\prod_{j < k} (r_k - r_j), which is not zero. So the Wronskian test gives independence. Example: y′′−3y′+2y=0y'' - 3 y' + 2 y = 0 has the solutions c1ex+c2e2xc_1 e^{x} + c_2 e^{2x}.

Explanations

L1 human

Each root of the characteristic polynomial gives one exponential solution. If the nn roots are different, these nn exponentials are independent, and their combinations are all the solutions.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 13 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
