Solutions for repeated roots

Statement

Let a0,…,an−1a_0, \dots, a_{n-1} be real numbers, and let p(r)=rn+an−1rn−1+⋯+a0p(r) = r^n + a_{n-1} r^{n-1} + \dots + a_0 be the characteristic polynomial of the equation y(n)+an−1y(n−1)+⋯+a0y=0y^{(n)} + a_{n-1} y^{(n-1)} + \dots + a_0 y = 0. Let rr be a real root of pp of multiplicity m≥1m \ge 1. Then the mm functions erx,xerx,…,xm−1erxe^{r x}, x e^{r x}, \dots, x^{m-1} e^{r x} are linearly independent solutions of the equation on R\mathbb{R}. If all the roots of pp are real, the union of these families over the distinct roots of pp is a fundamental system.

Remarks

For order 22: if rr is a double root of r2+a1r+a0r^2 + a_1 r + a_0, the solutions are (c1+c2x)erx(c_1 + c_2 x) e^{r x}. Example: y′′−2y′+y=0y'' - 2 y' + y = 0 has p(r)=(r−1)2p(r) = (r - 1)^2, so its solutions are (c1+c2x)ex(c_1 + c_2 x) e^{x}. The same result holds for complex roots, with complex solutions. For the real form, see complex conjugate roots.

Explanations

L1 human

A double root gives only one exponential, but we need two solutions. The extra solution is the exponential times xx. A root of multiplicity mm gives the exponential times 1,x,…,xm−11, x, \dots, x^{m-1}.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 14 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
