Power series solution

Summary

The power series method looks for a solution of a differential equation in the form y=∑k≥0ak(x−x0)ky = \sum_{k \ge 0} a_k (x - x_0)^k. Consider y′′+p(x)y′+q(x)y=0y'' + p(x) y' + q(x) y = 0, where pp and qq are analytic at x0x_0: they equal convergent power series near x0x_0. One puts the series into the equation and compares the coefficients of each power (x−x0)k(x - x_0)^k. This gives a recurrence for the aka_k, with a0a_0 and a1a_1 free. The resulting series converge at least on each disc around x0x_0 where the series of pp and qq converge, and they give two independent solutions.

Remarks

Example: for y′=yy' = y, the series ∑akxk\sum a_k x^k gives (k+1)ak+1=ak(k + 1) a_{k+1} = a_k, so ak=a0/k!a_k = a_0 / k! and y=a0exy = a_0 e^x. Example: for y′′+y=0y'' + y = 0, the recurrence is ak+2=−ak/((k+1)(k+2))a_{k+2} = -a_k / \left((k+1)(k+2)\right). It gives the series of cos⁡x\cos x and sin⁡x\sin x. At a point where a leading coefficient vanishes, the Frobenius method, a variant with a factor (x−x0)r(x - x_0)^r, is used.

Explanations

L1 human

Write the unknown function as a power series with unknown coefficients. The equation turns into a rule that gives each coefficient from the earlier ones. So you can compute the solution term by term, even when there is no closed formula.

What this node needs for W1
  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 9 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
