statement theorem

de Moivre's formula

Statement

For every real number xx and every integer nn, (cos⁡x+isin⁡x)n=cos⁡(nx)+isin⁡(nx).(\cos x + i \sin x)^n = \cos(n x) + i \sin(n x).

Remarks

Proof: by Euler's formula, the left side is (eix)n=einx(e^{i x})^n = e^{i n x}, which is the right side. For n=2n = 2, comparing real and imaginary parts gives cos⁡2x=cos⁡2x−sin⁡2x\cos 2x = \cos^2 x - \sin^2 x and sin⁡2x=2sin⁡xcos⁡x\sin 2x = 2 \sin x \cos x. For non-integer exponents nn, the formula fails in general.

Explanations

L1 human

Raising a point of the unit circle to the power nn multiplies its angle by nn. For example, cos⁡(π/4)+isin⁡(π/4)\cos(\pi/4) + i \sin(\pi/4) points at 4545 degrees, and its fourth power points at 180180 degrees, so it is −1-1.

What this node needs for W2
  • edge about out: the concepts that the statement is about (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a node is. They do not measure its truth.

What this needs

To read this node, read these 4 nodes in this order. The foundations come first, and the list ends with this node.

Each node uses the nodes above it. The colour of the bar on a box shows the evidence level, and the box also gives it as text. The list below has the same nodes.
  • no evidence level
  1. Complex numbers object
  2. Euler's formula statement
  3. Product of exponentials statement
  4. de Moivre's formula statement

What depends on this

5 nodes use this node, directly or through other nodes.
