Brunn–Minkowski theorem

Builds on Lebesgue measureCompact set

Statement

Let n≥1n \ge 1, and let λ\lambda be Lebesgue measure on ℝn\R^n. Let A,B⊆ℝnA, B \subseteq \R^n be nonempty compact sets, and let A+B={a+b:a∈A, b∈B}A + B = \set{a + b : a \in A, \ b \in B} be their Minkowski sum. Then λ(A+B)1/n≥λ(A)1/n+λ(B)1/n.\lambda(A + B)^{1/n} \ge \lambda(A)^{1/n} + \lambda(B)^{1/n}.

Remarks

For compact AA and BB the set A+BA + B is compact, hence measurable; for general measurable sets A+BA + B need not be measurable. One proof first checks boxes, where the inequality is the AM–GM inequality for the side ratios. It then passes to finite unions of disjoint boxes by induction on the number of boxes, cutting both sets by a coordinate hyperplane in matching proportions. Compact sets are then approximated from outside by such unions. Another proof applies the Prékopa–Leindler inequality to indicator functions. For compact convex sets of positive volume, equality holds if and only if AA and BB are homothetic. Example: for balls of radii rr and ss, A+BA + B is a ball of radius r+sr + s, and both sides equal ωn1/n(r+s)\omega_n^{1/n} (r + s), where ωn\omega_n is the volume of the unit ball.

For a student

The function t↦λ((1−t)A+tB)1/nt \mapsto \lambda((1-t) A + t B)^{1/n} is concave on [0,1][0, 1] for convex AA and BB; this concavity form goes back to Brunn. Applied to AA and a small ball, the theorem gives the isoperimetric inequality. It is the starting point of the theory of mixed volumes, and it has a functional form, the Prékopa–Leindler inequality, used in probability and convex geometry.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
