Statement
Let be a σ-finite measure space. Let be a measurable function with distribution function . Then where the left side is the integral of a non-negative function and the right side is taken with Lebesgue measure. More generally, for ,
Remarks
The name comes from the pointwise identity . It writes as a stack of thin horizontal layers, one for each height . Integrating over and exchanging the two integrals by Tonelli's theorem gives the formula. The second formula follows in the same way from .
Example: for on with Lebesgue measure, for and after. Both sides equal .
For a non-negative random variable the first formula reads .
Going deeper
For a student
The formula turns integrals of into integrals of its distribution function. This is why the norms depend only on , so equimeasurable functions and decreasing rearrangements have the same norms. It is the basic tool behind weak estimates, the Marcinkiewicz interpolation theorem and the bounds for the Hardy–Littlewood maximal function.
