Definition

Let n≥1n \ge 1, let λ\lambda be Lebesgue measure on ℝn\R^n, and let f ⁣:ℝn→ℝf \colon \R^n \to \R be locally integrable. For x∈ℝnx \in \R^n and r>0r > 0, let B(x,r)B(x, r) be the open ball of centre xx and radius rr. A point x∈ℝnx \in \R^n is a Lebesgue point of ff if lim⁡r→0+1λ(B(x,r))∫B(x,r)∣f(y)−f(x)∣ dλ(y)=0.\lim_{r \to 0^+} \frac{1}{\lambda(B(x, r))} \int_{B(x, r)} \abs{f(y) - f(x)} \, d\lambda(y) = 0.

Remarks

Example: if ff is continuous at xx, then xx is a Lebesgue point. Given ε>0\varepsilon > 0, choose r0r_0 with ∣f(y)−f(x)∣<ε\abs{f(y) - f(x)} < \varepsilon on B(x,r0)B(x, r_0); then every average with r<r0r < r_0 is at most ε\varepsilon.

Non-example: let n=1n = 1 and f=𝟏[0,∞)f = \mathbf{1}_{[0, \infty)}. At x=0x = 0, the integrand equals 11 on (−r,0)(-r, 0) and 00 on [0,r)[0, r), so the average is 1/21/2 for every rr, and 00 is not a Lebesgue point.

The set of Lebesgue points depends on the chosen function, not only on its class modulo null sets. Changing ff at one point xx can destroy the Lebesgue point property at xx but at no other point.
