Builds on Integrable functionLebesgue integralLebesgue measure
Statement
Let and let be integrable for Lebesgue measure. For let a Lebesgue integral, where is the dot product. Then as .
Remarks
Proof idea: for the indicator function of a box, is a product of terms like , which tends to . Linear combinations of such indicators, the step functions, are dense in . Since for every , the property passes to all integrable .
Example: for on , for , which tends to .
The same proof gives the version for Fourier coefficients. If is integrable on , then as over the integers. The lemma gives no rate of decay in general.

For a student
The lemma says that the Fourier transform maps into the space of continuous functions vanishing at infinity. In Fourier series it is a first step in the study of pointwise convergence, through the Dini and Jordan criteria. The image of is a proper subset of , so the decay at infinity alone does not characterise Fourier transforms of integrable functions.
