Measure and integration Construction of measures Problem
Measure problem of Lebesgue
Problem
Is there a function , defined on all bounded subsets of , with values in , such that:
- is countably additive: for pairwise disjoint bounded whose union is bounded.
- is invariant under congruence: when is a translation or reflection of .
- .
Remarks
Lebesgue measure has all three properties on the Lebesgue measurable sets. The answer is negative: Vitali showed in 1905, with the Vitali set and the axiom of choice, that no such exists. Banach and Ulam studied the question without congruence invariance. Is there a countably additive measure on all subsets of that is on points and on ? Ulam showed that a positive answer implies that some cardinal at most the continuum is real-valued measurable, a notion close to that of a measurable cardinal. Such a cardinal is weakly inaccessible, so ZFC cannot prove a positive answer, if ZFC is consistent. Dropping countable additivity and keeping finite additivity leads to the Banach measure problem.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
