Statement

Let 𝔤\mathfrak{g} be a complex semisimple Lie algebra with Cartan subalgebra 𝔥\mathfrak{h} and Weyl group WW. Choose positive roots Φ+\Phi^+, put 𝔫±=⨁α∈Φ+𝔤±α\mathfrak{n}^{\pm} = \bigoplus_{\alpha \in \Phi^+} \mathfrak{g}_{\pm\alpha}, and let ρ\rho be half the sum of the positive roots. Let Z(𝔤)Z(\mathfrak{g}) be the centre of the universal enveloping algebra U(𝔤)U(\mathfrak{g}). Identify U(𝔥)U(\mathfrak{h}) with the algebra S(𝔥)S(\mathfrak{h}) of polynomial functions on 𝔥∗\mathfrak{h}^*. By the Poincaré–Birkhoff–Witt theorem, U(𝔤)=U(𝔥)⊕(𝔫−U(𝔤)+U(𝔤)𝔫+)U(\mathfrak{g}) = U(\mathfrak{h}) \oplus (\mathfrak{n}^- U(\mathfrak{g}) + U(\mathfrak{g}) \mathfrak{n}^+); let π ⁣:U(𝔤)→S(𝔥)\pi \colon U(\mathfrak{g}) \to S(\mathfrak{h}) be the projection. For z∈Z(𝔤)z \in Z(\mathfrak{g}) define γ(z)∈S(𝔥)\gamma(z) \in S(\mathfrak{h}) by γ(z)(μ)=π(z)(μ−ρ)\gamma(z)(\mu) = \pi(z)(\mu - \rho) for μ∈𝔥∗\mu \in \mathfrak{h}^*. Then γ\gamma is an isomorphism of algebras from Z(𝔤)Z(\mathfrak{g}) onto the algebra S(𝔥)WS(\mathfrak{h})^W of WW-invariant polynomial functions on 𝔥∗\mathfrak{h}^*.

Remarks

The key fact behind the theorem is that z∈Z(𝔤)z \in Z(\mathfrak{g}) acts on the Verma module of highest weight λ\lambda by the scalar π(z)(λ)=γ(z)(λ+ρ)\pi(z)(\lambda) = \gamma(z)(\lambda + \rho). Comparing Verma modules whose highest weights are linked by simple reflections shows that γ(z)\gamma(z) is WW-invariant. Injectivity follows because a central element is determined by its action on all Verma modules. Surjectivity is harder; one proof uses the characters of the finite-dimensional modules and Chevalley's restriction theorem. Example for 𝔰𝔩2(ℂ)\mathfrak{sl}_2(\C): identify 𝔥∗\mathfrak{h}^* with ℂ\C by λ↦λ(h)\lambda \mapsto \lambda(h); then W={±1}W = \set{\pm 1} and ρ=1\rho = 1. The Casimir element is Ω=ef+fe+12h2=2fe+h+12h2\Omega = ef + fe + \tfrac{1}{2}h^2 = 2fe + h + \tfrac{1}{2}h^2, so π(Ω)(λ)=λ+12λ2\pi(\Omega)(\lambda) = \lambda + \tfrac{1}{2}\lambda^2. Then γ(Ω)(μ)=(μ−1)+12(μ−1)2=12(μ2−1)\gamma(\Omega)(\mu) = (\mu - 1) + \tfrac{1}{2}(\mu - 1)^2 = \tfrac{1}{2}(\mu^2 - 1), which is invariant under μ↦−μ\mu \mapsto -\mu, and Z(𝔰𝔩2)=ℂ[Ω]Z(\mathfrak{sl}_2) = \C[\Omega]. Without the shift by ρ\rho, the map π\pi is still an algebra isomorphism onto its image. But the image is invariant under the shifted action w⋅λ=w(λ+ρ)−ρw \cdot \lambda = w(\lambda + \rho) - \rho, not under the linear action.

For a student

Each z∈Z(𝔤)z \in Z(\mathfrak{g}) acts by a scalar on a highest weight module, and this defines a central character χλ\chi_\lambda. The theorem shows that χλ=χμ\chi_\lambda = \chi_\mu exactly when μ+ρ=w(λ+ρ)\mu + \rho = w(\lambda + \rho) for some w∈Ww \in W. This linkage principle splits category O into summands indexed by central characters, and it is a main step in the algebraic proof of the Weyl character formula. By Chevalley's theorem, Z(𝔤)Z(\mathfrak{g}) is a polynomial ring in rank⁡𝔤\operatorname{rank} \mathfrak{g} generators; for 𝔰𝔩n\mathfrak{sl}_n their degrees are 2,3,…,n2, 3, \dots, n.
