Definition

Let GG be a locally compact group and let HH be a closed subgroup. Assume that the homogeneous space X=G/HX = G / H carries a nonzero GG-invariant Radon measure μ\mu. The quasi-regular representation of GG on XX is the representation λX\lambda_X on the Hilbert space L2(X,μ)L^2(X, \mu) given by (λX(g)f)(x)=f(g−1x),g∈G, f∈L2(X,μ), x∈X.(\lambda_X(g) f)(x) = f(g^{-1} x), \qquad g \in G, \ f \in L^2(X, \mu), \ x \in X. It is a unitary representation, because μ\mu is GG-invariant. Harmonic analysis on the homogeneous space XX is the study of the decomposition of λX\lambda_X into irreducible unitary representations. The decomposition is a direct sum or a direct integral, and it gives a corresponding expansion of functions on XX.

Remarks

An invariant measure exists, for example, when GG and HH are both unimodular, or when HH is compact; see invariant measure on a homogeneous space.

Example: for G=ℝG = \R and H=2πℤH = 2\pi\Z, the space XX is the circle. Then λX\lambda_X is the direct sum of the characters x↦einxx \mapsto e^{i n x}, n∈ℤn \in \Z, each with multiplicity one, and the expansion is the classical Fourier series.

Example: for G=SO(3)G = \mathrm{SO}(3) and H=SO(2)H = \mathrm{SO}(2), L2(S2)L^2(S^2) is the direct sum of the spaces of spherical harmonics of degree ℓ≥0\ell \ge 0, each irreducible and occurring once.

Non-example: let GG be the affine group {x↦ax+b:a>0, b∈ℝ}\set{x \mapsto a x + b : a > 0, \ b \in \R} and HH the stabilizer {x↦ax:a>0}\set{x \mapsto a x : a > 0} of 00. Then G/H≅ℝG / H \cong \R, but there is no nonzero GG-invariant Radon measure on ℝ\R: invariance under translations forces a multiple of Lebesgue measure, and dilations change Lebesgue measure. So the first condition fails, and the formula above does not give a unitary representation.
