Hasse–Weil zeta function
Definition
Let be a scheme of finite type over , of Krull dimension . Let be its set of closed points; the residue field of each is a finite field, and let . The Hasse–Weil zeta function of is an Euler product that converges absolutely for .
Now let be a smooth projective variety over . Choose a finite set of primes and a model of that is smooth and projective over . For , let be the fibre of over , and let The zeta function of is the product of the local factors over . Changing the model changes only finitely many factors.
Remarks
The two forms agree: the local factor is the product of over the closed points of lying over .
Example: for , the closed points are the primes with , so , the Riemann zeta function, which converges for . For , one finds , since .
Non-example: the Dirichlet series is not of this form, since its coefficients take negative values, while expanding an Euler product of factors gives nonnegative integer coefficients.
For an elliptic curve over with a good model away from its conductor, the local factor at a good prime is . The Hasse–Weil conjecture predicts meromorphic continuation to and a functional equation; it is known for elliptic curves over by the modularity theorem.
