Definition

Let N≥1N \ge 1 be an integer. Let X0(N)X_0(N) be the modular curve of level NN. Its non-cuspidal points over ℂ\C correspond to isomorphism classes of pairs (E,C)(E, C). Here EE is an elliptic curve over ℂ\C and C⊂EC \subset E is a cyclic subgroup of order NN. Let KK be an imaginary quadratic field with ring of integers 𝒪K\mathcal{O}_K. A Heegner point of X0(N)X_0(N) for KK is a point given by a pair (E,C)(E, C) such that End⁡(E)≅End⁡(E/C)≅𝒪K\End(E) \cong \End(E/C) \cong \mathcal{O}_K. So both EE and E/CE/C have complex multiplication by 𝒪K\mathcal{O}_K.

Let EE be an elliptic curve over ℚ\Q of conductor NN with a modular parametrisation φ ⁣:X0(N)→E\varphi \colon X_0(N) \to E. The images φ(x)\varphi(x) of Heegner points xx are the Heegner points of EE.

Remarks

Heegner points for KK exist exactly when 𝒪K\mathcal{O}_K has an ideal 𝔫\mathfrak{n} with 𝒪K/𝔫≅ℤ/Nℤ\mathcal{O}_K/\mathfrak{n} \cong \Z/N\Z; then (ℂ/𝒪K,𝔫−1/𝒪K)(\C/\mathcal{O}_K, \mathfrak{n}^{-1}/\mathcal{O}_K) is one. This holds, for example, under the Heegner hypothesis that every prime dividing NN splits in KK. By the theory of complex multiplication, Heegner points are defined over the Hilbert class field HH of KK, and the trace yK=∑σ∈Gal⁡(H/K)φ(x)σy_K = \sum_{\sigma \in \Gal(H/K)} \varphi(x)^\sigma lies in E(K)E(K).

Example: for N=1N = 1, X0(1)X_0(1) is the jj-line and the condition is only that EE has CM by 𝒪K\mathcal{O}_K. For K=ℚ(i)K = \Q(i), the curve ℂ/ℤ[i]\C/\Z[i] has endomorphism ring ℤ[i]=𝒪K\Z[i] = \mathcal{O}_K, so the point j=1728j = 1728 is a Heegner point for KK.

Non-example: the curve ℂ/(ℤ+2iℤ)\C/(\Z + 2i\Z) has endomorphism ring ℤ[2i]\Z[2i], an order of conductor 22 in ℚ(i)\Q(i). This is not the maximal order ℤ[i]\Z[i], so its point j(2i)j(2i) of X0(1)X_0(1) is not a Heegner point for ℚ(i)\Q(i) in this sense.

Some authors also allow pairs with CM by a non-maximal order of KK, and speak of Heegner points of conductor cc.
