Definition
Let be a local ring with residue field . For , write for the polynomial obtained by reducing the coefficients modulo . The ring is Henselian if the following holds for every monic polynomial . If with monic and coprime, then there are monic with , and .
Remarks
An equivalent condition: for every monic and every with and , there is with and . That is, simple roots modulo lift to roots.
Example: every complete Noetherian local ring is Henselian, by the general form of Hensel's lemma; this includes the -adic integers and for a field . Every field is Henselian, since and .
Non-example: is not Henselian. For , one has in , and the factors and are coprime because . A lift would give a root of , but has no rational square root.
