Henselization
Definition
Let be a local ring. A Henselization of is a local ring together with a local homomorphism such that:
- is a Henselian local ring.
- For every Henselian local ring and every local homomorphism , there is exactly one local homomorphism with .
Remarks
A Henselization exists for every local ring, and the universal property makes it unique up to a unique isomorphism. One construction takes the direct limit of the localizations of Γ©tale -algebras at primes over with trivial residue field extension. The map is faithfully flat, the ideal is the maximal ideal of , and induces an isomorphism of residue fields. If is Noetherian, then is Noetherian and has the same completion as .
Example: if is already Henselian, then with the identity map is a Henselization, because is the only choice in clause 2.
Non-example: with the identity map is not its own Henselization, because it fails clause 1. The polynomial has the simple root modulo , but is not a square in , so the root does not lift to .
