Definition

Let VV be a vector space over ℂ\C. Let h ⁣:V×V→ℂh \colon V \times V \to \C be a sesquilinear form, linear in the first argument and conjugate-linear in the second. The form hh is a Hermitian form on VV when h(v,u)=h(u,v)‾for all u,v∈V,h(v, u) = \overline{h(u, v)} \qquad \text{for all } u, v \in V, where the bar is the complex conjugate.

Remarks

Example: on ℂ2\C^2, let h(x,y)=x1y1‾+2x2y2‾h(x, y) = x_1 \overline{y_1} + 2 x_2 \overline{y_2}. It is sesquilinear, and h(y,x)=y1x1‾+2y2x2‾=h(x,y)‾h(y, x) = y_1 \overline{x_1} + 2 y_2 \overline{x_2} = \overline{h(x, y)}, so it is Hermitian. Non-example: h(x,y)=x1y2‾h(x, y) = x_1 \overline{y_2} on ℂ2\C^2 is sesquilinear but not Hermitian, because h(e1,e2)=1h(e_1, e_2) = 1 while h(e2,e1)=0h(e_2, e_1) = 0. Taking u=vu = v gives h(v,v)=h(v,v)‾h(v, v) = \overline{h(v, v)}, so h(v,v)h(v, v) is real for every vv. On ℂn\C^n, every Hermitian form is h(x,y)=y∗Mxh(x, y) = y^* M x for one Hermitian matrix MM, that is, M∗=MM^* = M. Some authors take the form conjugate-linear in the first argument instead; the condition h(v,u)=h(u,v)‾h(v, u) = \overline{h(u, v)} is the same.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
