Hilbert C*-module
Builds on Positive elementHilbert space
Definition
Let be a C*-algebra. Let be a complex vector space that is a right -module, with for , and . An -valued inner product on is a map such that for all , and :
- .
- .
- .
- is a positive element of , and only for .
Then is a norm on . A Hilbert C-module* over is such a module that is complete for this norm.
Remarks
The inner product is linear in the second argument and conjugate-linear in the first, as is usual in this theory. A Hilbert -module is the same as a complex Hilbert space with this convention.
Example: with . Clauses 1 to 3 follow from the algebra rules and ; the element is positive, and forces . The norm is by the C* identity, so is complete.
Another example is with .
Non-example: over with . Clauses 1 to 3 hold, but is not positive, so clause 4 fails.
