Linear and multilinear algebra; matrix theory Special matrices Example
Hilbert matrix
Builds on Gram matrix
Example
For , the Hilbert matrix is the real matrix with entries For it is
It is a Hankel matrix: the entry depends only on , with .
It is a Cauchy matrix: with and , the entry is , and all are nonzero.
It is a positive definite matrix. Indeed, , so is the Gram matrix of the functions for the inner product . For and , this gives , which is positive when , because then is a nonzero polynomial.
Remarks
The inverse of has integer entries; for example and . The Hilbert matrix is a standard test case in numerical analysis, because it is badly conditioned: its condition number grows very fast with .
