Definition
Let be a Noetherian local ring, let be a finitely generated -module, and let be an -primary ideal of . The Hilbert–Samuel function of with respect to is the function given by where denotes the length of an -module.
Remarks
The length is finite because is a finitely generated module over the Artinian ring . There is a polynomial with rational coefficients, the Hilbert–Samuel polynomial, such that for all large . If , its degree is the Krull dimension of , so it does not depend on . Example: for , with a field, and , the module has the -basis of monomials with , so . Non-example: for the same ring and , which is not -primary, the module has infinite length, so the formula does not define a function to . Some authors use instead, which shifts the variable by one.
