Definition

Let VV be a real vector space of dimension nn with an inner product ⟨⋅,⋅⟩\ip{\cdot}{\cdot} and an orientation. Let vol⁡=e1∧⋯∧en\operatorname{vol} = e_1 \wedge \dots \wedge e_n for any positively oriented orthonormal basis e1,…,ene_1, \dots, e_n. On the exterior power ΛkV\Lambda^k V use the inner product with ⟨v1∧⋯∧vk,w1∧⋯∧wk⟩=det⁡(⟨vi,wj⟩)\ip{v_1 \wedge \dots \wedge v_k}{w_1 \wedge \dots \wedge w_k} = \det\bigl(\ip{v_i}{w_j}\bigr). The Hodge star operator is the unique linear map ⋆ ⁣:ΛkV→Λn−kV\star \colon \Lambda^k V \to \Lambda^{n-k} V such that α∧⋆β=⟨α,β⟩vol⁡for all α,β∈ΛkV.\alpha \wedge \star\beta = \ip{\alpha}{\beta} \operatorname{vol} \quad \text{for all } \alpha, \beta \in \Lambda^k V. On an oriented Riemannian manifold (M,g)(M, g), the Hodge star is applied pointwise to differential forms, with V=Tp∗MV = T_p^* M and the inner product induced by gg.

Remarks

Example: in ℝ3\R^3 with the standard orientation, ⋆dx=dy∧dz\star dx = dy \wedge dz, ⋆dy=dz∧dx\star dy = dz \wedge dx and ⋆dz=dx∧dy\star dz = dx \wedge dy. Check for dxdx: dx∧⋆dx=dx∧dy∧dz=⟨dx,dx⟩vol⁡dx \wedge \star dx = dx \wedge dy \wedge dz = \ip{dx}{dx} \operatorname{vol}, and dy∧⋆dx=0=⟨dy,dx⟩vol⁡dy \wedge \star dx = 0 = \ip{dy}{dx} \operatorname{vol}, and the same for dzdz.

Non-example: in ℝ2\R^2 the map with dx↦−dydx \mapsto -dy and dy↦dxdy \mapsto dx is not the Hodge star, since dx∧(−dy)=−vol⁡dx \wedge (-dy) = -\operatorname{vol}, while ⟨dx,dx⟩vol⁡=vol⁡\ip{dx}{dx} \operatorname{vol} = \operatorname{vol}. The Hodge star of ℝ2\R^2 is ⋆dx=dy\star dx = dy, ⋆dy=−dx\star dy = -dx, a rotation by a right angle.

On orthonormal bases, ⋆(ei1∧⋯∧eik)=±ej1∧⋯∧ejn−k\star(e_{i_1} \wedge \dots \wedge e_{i_k}) = \pm e_{j_1} \wedge \dots \wedge e_{j_{n-k}}, where the jj's are the complementary indices and the sign is that of the permutation (i1,…,ik,j1,…,jn−k)(i_1, \dots, i_k, j_1, \dots, j_{n-k}). It satisfies ⋆1=vol⁡\star 1 = \operatorname{vol} and ⋆⋆=(−1)k(n−k)\star\star = (-1)^{k(n-k)} on ΛkV\Lambda^k V, and it is an isometry. Reversing the orientation changes the sign of ⋆\star.
