Definition

Let U⊆ℝnU \subseteq \R^n be open, let k≥0k \ge 0 be an integer, and let 0<α≤10 < \alpha \le 1. For a function v ⁣:U→ℝv \colon U \to \R, its Hölder seminorm of exponent α\alpha is [v]α,U=sup⁡x,y∈U,  x≠y∣v(x)−v(y)∣∣x−y∣α.[v]_{\alpha, U} = \sup_{x, y \in U, \; x \ne y} \frac{\abs{v(x) - v(y)}}{\abs{x - y}^{\alpha}}. The Hölder space Ck,α(U‾)C^{k,\alpha}(\overline{U}) is the set of functions u ⁣:U→ℝu \colon U \to \R such that:

  1. uu is kk times continuously differentiable on UU;
  2. every partial derivative ∂βu\partial^\beta u with ∣β∣≤k\abs{\beta} \le k is bounded on UU;
  3. every partial derivative ∂βu\partial^\beta u with ∣β∣=k\abs{\beta} = k satisfies [∂βu]α,U<∞[\partial^\beta u]_{\alpha, U} < \infty.

Its norm is ∥u∥Ck,α(U‾)=∑∣β∣≤ksup⁡U∣∂βu∣+∑∣β∣=k[∂βu]α,U.\norm{u}_{C^{k,\alpha}(\overline{U})} = \sum_{\abs{\beta} \le k} \sup_{U} \abs{\partial^\beta u} + \sum_{\abs{\beta} = k} [\partial^\beta u]_{\alpha, U}.

Remarks

With this norm, Ck,α(U‾)C^{k,\alpha}(\overline{U}) is a Banach space. Condition 3 says that the derivatives of order kk are Hölder continuous with exponent α\alpha on UU, so they extend continuously to the closure U‾\overline{U}. The space C0,1(U‾)C^{0,1}(\overline{U}) is the space of bounded Lipschitz functions. On a bounded set UU, Ck,β(U‾)⊆Ck,α(U‾)C^{k,\beta}(\overline{U}) \subseteq C^{k,\alpha}(\overline{U}) for 0<α<β≤10 < \alpha < \beta \le 1. The local space Ck,α(U)C^{k,\alpha}(U) is the set of uu with u∈Ck,α(V‾)u \in C^{k,\alpha}(\overline{V}) for every open VV with compact closure in UU.

Example: u(x)=∣x∣u(x) = \sqrt{\abs{x}} lies in C0,1/2([−1,1])C^{0,1/2}([-1, 1]). It is continuous and bounded by 11, and ∣∣x∣−∣y∣∣≤∣∣x∣−∣y∣∣≤∣x−y∣1/2\abs{\sqrt{\abs{x}} - \sqrt{\abs{y}}} \le \sqrt{\abs{\abs{x} - \abs{y}}} \le \abs{x - y}^{1/2}.

Non-example: the same uu is not in C0,1([−1,1])C^{0,1}([-1, 1]), so it fails condition 3 for α=1\alpha = 1. Indeed ∣u(x)−u(0)∣/∣x−0∣=∣x∣−1/2\abs{u(x) - u(0)} / \abs{x - 0} = \abs{x}^{-1/2} is unbounded as x→0x \to 0.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
