Hölder summation
Builds on Summability methodPartial sumCesàro mean
Definition
Let be a series of complex numbers with partial sums . Put , and for each integer let be the Cesàro mean of the sequence : The series is Hölder summable of order , or summable, to if as .
Remarks
The method is ordinary convergence, and is Cesàro summation of order .
Example: for the partial sums are . Then and . So is the sequence up to terms that tend to , and its averages tend to . The series is summable to .
Non-example: the same series is not summable, since has the two limit points and .
By a theorem of Knopp and Schur, for each a series is summable to if and only if it is Cesàro summable to .
