Holonomy
Definition
Let be a connected smooth manifold, let be a smooth vector bundle with a connection , and let . For a piecewise smooth loop based at , let be the parallel transport along . The holonomy group of at is The restricted holonomy group is the subset given by the loops that are null-homotopic.
Remarks
is a group, because and . It is a Lie subgroup of , and is its identity component; the quotient is a quotient of . Changing the base point along a curve from to conjugates the group: . Example: the flat connection on has for every loop, so is trivial. For the Levi-Civita connection of the round sphere , : the transport around a loop is the rotation by the enclosed area. For the Levi-Civita connection of any Riemannian -manifold, , and if is orientable. Non-example: the flat connection on the Möbius line bundle over the circle has trivial restricted holonomy, but is not trivial; so flatness alone does not force trivial holonomy.
