Definition
Let be an integer and let be a locally compact Hausdorff space. The space is a homology -manifold if, for every point , the local relative homology groups satisfy
Remarks
Several variants are in use: some authors also ask that be finite-dimensional or an absolute neighbourhood retract, or use sheaf-theoretic homology or coefficients in a ring other than .
Example: a topological -manifold is a homology -manifold. By excision, , and the long exact sequence of the pair gives , which is for and otherwise.
Non-example: let be the wedge of two circles and the wedge point. Then is a disjoint union of two open arcs, and the long exact sequence gives , so is not a homology -manifold.
The suspension of the Poincaré homology sphere is a homology -manifold that is not a topological manifold. The reason is that a small neighbourhood of a suspension point, with that point removed, is not simply connected.
