Homology sphere
Definition
Let be an integer. A homology -sphere is a closed (compact, without boundary) topological -manifold whose integral singular homology is that of the -sphere:
Remarks
The condition says that is connected, and says that is orientable.
Example: the Poincaré homology sphere , where is the binary icosahedral group of order acting by left multiplication. Its fundamental group is perfect, so , the abelianisation of , is ; Poincaré duality and the universal coefficient theorem then give and .
Non-example: the lens space with is a closed orientable -manifold, but .
A simply connected homology -sphere is homotopy equivalent to , by the Hurewicz and Whitehead theorems.
