Homomorphism
Definition
Let be a signature and let and be -structures with domains and . A homomorphism from to is a function such that:
- for each function symbol of arity and all , ;
- for each constant symbol , ;
- for each relation symbol of arity and all , if then .
Remarks
Example: for the signature , the map that sends an integer to its residue class is a homomorphism. Indeed, the class of is the sum of the classes of and , and the class of is .
Non-example: for the same signature, the map from to fails clause 2, since ; it also fails clause 1, since .
For a signature with only function and constant symbols, clauses 1 and 2 are the whole condition; this is the notion of homomorphism of universal algebra. Whether a map is a homomorphism depends on the signature. In the signature of groups the inverse is preserved by definition, while for alone it follows from the group axioms.
