Homotopy extension property
Builds on HomotopySubspace topology
Definition
Let be a topological space, let carry the subspace topology, let be a topological space, and let . Let be continuous, and let be a homotopy with for all . An extension of along is a homotopy such that:
- for all ;
- for all and .
The pair has the homotopy extension property with respect to if every such has an extension along every such . The pair has the homotopy extension property if it has it with respect to every topological space .
Remarks
If is closed in , then has the homotopy extension property if and only if is a retract of . Example: has it, because the radial projection from the point of gives a retraction of onto . Non-example: let and . A retraction of onto would fix , and would send each connected set to . Then , so is not continuous and the pair fails the property. Every CW pair has the homotopy extension property.
