Definition
Let be a topological space, let be a pointed space, and let be a continuous map. Let and let be the space of paths with the compact-open topology. The homotopy fiber of over is with the subspace topology of the product .
Remarks
The map , , is a fibration, and its fiber over is the space of paths from to . The ordinary fiber embeds in by , where is the constant path. If is a Serre fibration, this embedding is a weak homotopy equivalence.
Example: if and , then is the space of paths from to , which is the loop space .
Non-example: the ordinary fiber need not be a homotopy fiber. Let , , and . Then is empty, while is the space of paths in from to , which is nonempty and contractible.
The notations and are also used.
