Definition

Let (X,x0)(X, x_0) be a pointed space, and let n≥1n \ge 1 be an integer. Let In=[0,1]nI^n = [0, 1]^n be the nn-cube, with boundary ∂In\partial I^n. The nn-th homotopy group πn(X,x0)\pi_n(X, x_0) is the set of homotopy classes of continuous maps f ⁣:In→Xf \colon I^n \to X with f(∂In)={x0}f(\partial I^n) = \set{x_0}. Here the homotopies F ⁣:In×[0,1]→XF \colon I^n \times [0, 1] \to X must satisfy F(s,t)=x0F(s, t) = x_0 for all s∈∂Ins \in \partial I^n and all tt. The group operation is [f]+[g]=[f+g][f] + [g] = [f + g], where (f+g)(s1,s2,…,sn)={f(2s1,s2,…,sn)if s1≤12,g(2s1−1,s2,…,sn)if s1≥12.(f + g)(s_1, s_2, \ldots, s_n) = \begin{cases} f(2 s_1, s_2, \ldots, s_n) & \text{if } s_1 \le \tfrac12, \\ g(2 s_1 - 1, s_2, \ldots, s_n) & \text{if } s_1 \ge \tfrac12. \end{cases}

Remarks

Since In/∂InI^n / \partial I^n is homeomorphic to SnS^n, the elements of πn(X,x0)\pi_n(X, x_0) are also the pointed homotopy classes of pointed maps (Sn,s0)→(X,x0)(S^n, s_0) \to (X, x_0). For n=1n = 1 the definition gives the fundamental group. The set π0(X,x0)\pi_0(X, x_0) is defined as the set of path components of XX, with the component of x0x_0 as base point; it is not a group in general.

Example: πn(ℝm,0)\pi_n(\R^m, 0) is trivial for all n≥1n \ge 1. For ff as above, F(s,t)=(1−t)f(s)F(s, t) = (1 - t) f(s) is a homotopy that keeps ∂In\partial I^n at 00 and ends at the constant map.

Non-example: a map f ⁣:In→Xf \colon I^n \to X that does not send all of ∂In\partial I^n to x0x_0 does not define an element of πn(X,x0)\pi_n(X, x_0). Likewise, free homotopy classes of maps S1→XS^1 \to X form in general a different set: they correspond to conjugacy classes of π1(X,x0)\pi_1(X, x_0) when XX is path-connected.
