Homotopy groups of spheres

Builds on Homotopy group

Definition

Let n≥1n \ge 1, and let Sn={x∈ℝn+1:∥x∥=1}S^n = \set{x \in \R^{n+1} : \norm{x} = 1} be the unit nn-sphere with base point s0=(1,0,…,0)s_0 = (1, 0, \ldots, 0). For k≥1k \ge 1, the group πk(Sn)\pi_k(S^n) is the homotopy group πk(Sn,s0)\pi_k(S^n, s_0). The homotopy groups of spheres are the groups πk(Sn)\pi_k(S^n) for all k,n≥1k, n \ge 1.

Remarks

Changing the base point gives isomorphic groups, because SnS^n is path-connected; this is why it is usually omitted. Example: π1(S1)≅ℤ\pi_1(S^1) \cong \Z, and the class of a loop is its winding number. Example: πk(Sn)=0\pi_k(S^n) = 0 for 1≤k<n1 \le k < n. Give SnS^n the CW structure with one 00-cell and one nn-cell. By cellular approximation, a based map Sk→SnS^k \to S^n is homotopic to a map into the kk-skeleton, which is a point.

Non-example: the groups are not the homology groups of spheres. The homology H3(S2)H_3(S^2) is zero, but π3(S2)≅ℤ\pi_3(S^2) \cong \Z, generated by the Hopf map.

Further values: πn(Sn)≅ℤ\pi_n(S^n) \cong \Z for all n≥1n \ge 1, πk(S1)=0\pi_k(S^1) = 0 for k≥2k \ge 2, and πn+1(Sn)≅ℤ/2\pi_{n+1}(S^n) \cong \Z/2 for n≥3n \ge 3.
