Homotopy lifting property
Definition
Let , and be topological spaces, let be a continuous map, and let . The map has the homotopy lifting property with respect to if the following holds. For every continuous map and every homotopy with for all , there is a homotopy such that:
- .
- for all .
Remarks
Example: every covering map has the homotopy lifting property with respect to every space, and the lift is then unique. For a point this is the path lifting property: for , , the loop with starting point lifts to .
Non-example: let with the discrete topology, and the inclusion. For a point, and , clauses 1 and 2 would force to be a path in from to , but is not path-connected.
In diagram form: every commutative square with on top, on the left and on the right has a diagonal making both triangles commute. A map with this property for all spaces is a Hurewicz fibration; for all cubes , a Serre fibration.
