Definition

Let MM and NN be smooth manifolds, let r≥1r \ge 1, and let Jr(M,N)J^r(M, N) be the jet bundle of rr-jets of smooth maps M→NM \to N, with projection Jr(M,N)→MJ^r(M, N) \to M. A differential relation of order rr is a subset ℛ⊆Jr(M,N)\mathcal{R} \subseteq J^r(M, N). A formal solution of ℛ\mathcal{R} is a continuous section F ⁣:M→Jr(M,N)F \colon M \to J^r(M, N) with F(M)⊆ℛF(M) \subseteq \mathcal{R}. A formal solution is holonomic if F=jrfF = j^r f for a smooth map f ⁣:M→Nf \colon M \to N, where jrfj^r f is the rr-jet extension of ff. In that case ff is a genuine solution of ℛ\mathcal{R}. The relation ℛ\mathcal{R} satisfies the h-principle if every formal solution is homotopic to a holonomic one. The homotopy must run through formal solutions of ℛ\mathcal{R}.

Remarks

Every genuine solution gives a formal solution, so the h-principle says that the only obstruction to solving ℛ\mathcal{R} is the homotopy-theoretic obstruction to finding a formal solution. Stronger versions ask that the inclusion of holonomic solutions into formal solutions be a weak homotopy equivalence; the parametric h-principle is of this kind. Example: let dim⁡M<dim⁡N\dim M < \dim N and let ℛ⊆J1(M,N)\mathcal{R} \subseteq J^1(M, N) be the set of 11-jets whose linear part is injective. Genuine solutions are immersions, formal solutions are fibrewise injective bundle maps TM→TNTM \to TN, and the Smale–Hirsch theorem shows that ℛ\mathcal{R} satisfies the h-principle. Non-example: for M=S1M = S^1, N=ℝN = \R and the analogous relation of injective 11-jets, the section F(x)=(0,the linear map v↦v)F(x) = (0, \text{the linear map } v \mapsto v), using the standard trivialisation of TS1TS^1, is a formal solution. But there is no genuine solution, because a smooth function on the compact circle has a maximum, where its derivative is zero; so the h-principle fails.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
