Hook length formula

Builds on Young tableauYoung diagramInteger partition

Statement

Let λ\lambda be a partition of nn with Young diagram DD. For a cell cc of DD, let a(c)a(c) be the number of cells of DD to the right of cc in its row. Let l(c)l(c) be the number of cells of DD below cc in its column. The hook length of cc is h(c)=a(c)+l(c)+1h(c) = a(c) + l(c) + 1. Let fλf^\lambda be the number of standard Young tableaux of shape λ\lambda. Then fλ=n!∏c∈Dh(c).f^\lambda = \frac{n!}{\prod_{c \in D} h(c)}.

Remarks

The formula is due to Frame, Robinson and Thrall. Let F(λ)F(\lambda) denote the right-hand side of the formula. A short proof by Greene, Nijenhuis and Wilf uses a random "hook walk" inside the diagram. They show that the walk ends at each corner cc with probability F(λ∖c)/F(λ)F(\lambda \setminus c) / F(\lambda), so these ratios add up to 11. The largest entry nn of a standard tableau sits in a corner. So fλf^\lambda is the sum of fλ∖cf^{\lambda \setminus c} over the corners cc, and FF satisfies the same recursion; induction on nn finishes the proof.

Example: for λ=(2,2)\lambda = (2, 2) the hook lengths are 3,23, 2 in the first row and 2,12, 1 in the second row. The formula gives 4!/(3⋅2⋅2⋅1)=24! / (3 \cdot 2 \cdot 2 \cdot 1) = 2, and indeed the standard tableaux are 1234\begin{smallmatrix} 1 & 2 \\ 3 & 4 \end{smallmatrix} and 1324\begin{smallmatrix} 1 & 3 \\ 2 & 4 \end{smallmatrix}. For λ=(n)\lambda = (n) the hook lengths are n,n−1,…,1n, n-1, \dots, 1 and fλ=1f^\lambda = 1.

Going deeper

For a student

The number fλf^\lambda is the dimension of the irreducible representation of the symmetric group SnS_n indexed by λ\lambda. So the hook length formula computes these dimensions directly. Together with the Robinson–Schensted correspondence, which gives ∑λ(fλ)2=n!\sum_{\lambda} (f^\lambda)^2 = n!, it is a basic tool of the representation theory of SnS_n. There are versions for shifted shapes and for trees, and a qq-analogue that counts tableaux by a statistic.
