Definition
Let , and let be a continuous map. Let be the CW complex obtained by attaching a -cell to along . Its singular cohomology with integer coefficients is for and is zero otherwise. Let and be the generators given by fixed orientations of and . The Hopf invariant of is the integer such that where is the cup product.
Remarks
The integer depends only on the homotopy class of , and is a homomorphism on homotopy groups. A change of the generator changes only the sign of .
Example: for the Hopf map , the space is . The square of a generator of generates , so .
Non-example: for the construction breaks down. A map of degree gives , which is not when , so no generator as above exists.
If is odd, then by graded commutativity, and since has no torsion, . If is even, the Whitehead product of the identity of with itself has Hopf invariant .
