Problem

Consider a Friedmann–Lemaître–Robertson–Walker model with a Big Bang. Suppose its expansion decelerates at all times before the emission of the cosmic microwave background. Then the particle horizon at the time of emission is small. Seen from Earth today, it subtends only an angle of about one or two degrees on the sky. So points of the microwave sky separated by more than this angle have never been in causal contact. Yet the microwave background has the same temperature in all directions to about one part in 10510^5. The problem is to explain this uniformity.

Remarks

The size of the particle horizon follows from the scale factor. In a decelerating model with a∝tαa \propto t^{\alpha} and 0<α<10 < \alpha < 1, the particle horizon has proper distance dp(t)=t/(1−α)d_p(t) = t/(1 - \alpha). This is comparable to the Hubble radius 1/H=t/α1/H = t/\alpha. Regions that are at the edge of today's observable universe were, at the time of emission, much farther apart than this. The standard proposed solution is cosmic inflation. An early epoch of accelerated expansion makes the integral ∫dt/a\int dt/a from the beginning large. Then the whole observable universe comes from a single causally connected region. Other proposals, such as variable speed of light theories, exist, but inflation is the most widely accepted.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
