Statement
Let be an abelian category. Let be a short exact sequence in . Let and be projective resolutions. Then there is a projective resolution with for every with the following property. The inclusions and the projections form a short exact sequence of chain complexes that lifts the sequence .
Remarks
The proof builds one degree at a time. Since is projective, the map lifts through to a map . Together with this gives , which is an epimorphism by the snake lemma. The kernels again form a short exact sequence, and the same step is repeated with them. The differential of is in general not the direct sum of the differentials: it has an extra component . For example, over take with and ; the lemma gives a resolution of by in degree and in degree . The dual statement holds for injective resolutions.
Going deeper
For a student
The lemma is the key step to show that a short exact sequence gives a long exact sequence of left derived functors. Applying an additive functor to the split sequences keeps them exact, and the long exact sequence in homology does the rest. The same construction, applied degree by degree, is used to build CartanβEilenberg resolutions.
