Definition
Let and be topological spaces and let be a continuous map. Write . The map is a Hurewicz fibration if it has the homotopy lifting property with respect to every topological space . This means the following. Let be a homotopy and let be continuous with . Then there is a homotopy with
Remarks
Example: for spaces and , the projection is a Hurewicz fibration. Given and , the lift works.
Non-example: the inclusion is not a fibration. Take a point, and : a lift would satisfy , but is not in the image of .
Covering maps and fibre bundles over paracompact Hausdorff bases are Hurewicz fibrations. If is a Hurewicz fibration and is path-connected, all fibres are homotopy equivalent. Every Hurewicz fibration is a Serre fibration, where the lifting property is only required for a cube or a CW complex, but not conversely.
