Definition
Let be a real number with , and let be a complex number with . The Hurwitz zeta function is where with the real logarithm. The series converges absolutely for . For fixed , the function has an analytic continuation to a meromorphic function on , and this continuation is also written .
Remarks
For , the series is , so is the Riemann zeta function . For , the terms are , so . The value is not allowed in the series: there the terms behave like and the series diverges. The continuation has a single pole, at ; it is simple with residue . For a Dirichlet character modulo , grouping by its residue gives Some authors also allow complex with .
