Statement

Let KK be a field of characteristic not 22, and let AA be a composition algebra over KK with a unit. Then dim⁡KA∈{1,2,4,8}\dim_K A \in \set{1, 2, 4, 8}, and:

  1. if dim⁡KA=1\dim_K A = 1, then A=KA = K;
  2. if dim⁡KA=2\dim_K A = 2, then AA is commutative and associative;
  3. if dim⁡KA=4\dim_K A = 4, then AA is a quaternion algebra, associative and not commutative;
  4. if dim⁡KA=8\dim_K A = 8, then AA is an octonion algebra, alternative and not associative.

Each AA of dimension 22, 44 or 88 is obtained from a unital composition algebra of half its dimension by the Cayley–Dickson construction. In particular, for K=ℝK = \R and a positive definite norm, AA is isomorphic to ℝ\R, ℂ\C, the quaternions ℍ\mathbb{H} or the octonions 𝕆\mathbb{O}.

Remarks

The idea of the proof: let BB be a proper unital subalgebra of AA on which the norm is nondegenerate. Choose vv orthogonal to BB with N(v)≠0N(v) \neq 0. Then B+BvB + Bv is a subalgebra of twice the dimension, isomorphic to the Cayley–Dickson double of BB with parameter −N(v)-N(v). The double of BB is again a composition algebra only when BB is associative. The double is associative only when BB is commutative and associative. So the doubling from KK stops after at most three steps. Example: over ℝ\R, the composition law for ℍ\mathbb{H} gives Euler's four-square identity, and the one for 𝕆\mathbb{O} gives Degen's eight-square identity.

Going deeper

For a student

The theorem classifies the normed division algebras: they are the composition algebras over ℝ\R with a positive definite norm. It also answers the question of Hurwitz about sum-of-squares identities: an identity (x12+⋯+xn2)(y12+⋯+yn2)=z12+⋯+zn2(x_1^2 + \cdots + x_n^2)(y_1^2 + \cdots + y_n^2) = z_1^2 + \cdots + z_n^2 with each zkz_k bilinear in xx and yy exists only for n=1,2,4,8n = 1, 2, 4, 8. Over ℝ\R, ℂ\C and finite fields, the classification becomes a classification of quadratic forms, since the algebra is determined by its norm.
