Definition
Let be a Riemannian manifold with Levi-Civita connection . The manifold is hyperkähler if it carries three almost complex structures , , such that:
- for all tangent vectors ;
- ;
- .
Remarks
From and with one gets the quaternion relations . Clauses 1 and 2 say that is Kähler for each of , , , and in fact for whenever . Equivalently, the holonomy group of is contained in , where .
Example: with the flat metric and given by left multiplication by the quaternions on each coordinate. These maps are orthogonal, have constant coefficients so they are parallel, and satisfy .
Non-example: with the Fubini–Study metric is Kähler of real dimension , but it is not hyperkähler. A hyperkähler metric is Ricci-flat, while the Fubini–Study metric has positive Ricci curvature.
