Definition

Let RR be a Dedekind domain with field of fractions KK. Let I(R)I(R) be the set of nonzero fractional ideals of RR; under the product of fractional ideals it is an abelian group with identity RR. Let P(R)={xR:x∈K×}P(R) = \set{xR : x \in K^{\times}} be its subgroup of principal fractional ideals. The ideal class group of RR is the quotient group Cl⁡(R)=I(R)/P(R).\operatorname{Cl}(R) = I(R) / P(R). For a number field KK with ring of integers 𝒪K\mathcal{O}_K, the class group of KK is Cl⁡(K)=Cl⁡(𝒪K)\operatorname{Cl}(K) = \operatorname{Cl}(\mathcal{O}_K).

Remarks

Example: R=ℤR = \Z is a principal ideal domain, so every fractional ideal is xℤx\Z with x∈ℚ×x \in \Q^{\times}, I(ℤ)=P(ℤ)I(\Z) = P(\Z), and Cl⁡(ℤ)\operatorname{Cl}(\Z) is trivial. Example: for R=ℤ[−5]R = \Z[\sqrt{-5}], let 𝔭=(2,1+−5)\mathfrak{p} = (2, 1 + \sqrt{-5}). Then 𝔭2\mathfrak{p}^2 is generated by 44, 2+2−52 + 2\sqrt{-5} and (1+−5)2=−4+2−5(1 + \sqrt{-5})^2 = -4 + 2\sqrt{-5}; all are multiples of 22 and the ideal contains 44 and (2+2−5)−(−4+2−5)=6(2 + 2\sqrt{-5}) - (-4 + 2\sqrt{-5}) = 6, hence 22, so 𝔭2=(2)\mathfrak{p}^2 = (2). The ideal 𝔭\mathfrak{p} is not principal, since a2+5b2=2a^2 + 5b^2 = 2 has no integer solution; so its class has order 22, and in fact Cl⁡(ℤ[−5])≅ℤ/2ℤ\operatorname{Cl}(\Z[\sqrt{-5}]) \cong \Z/2\Z. Non-example: the nonzero integral ideals of RR alone do not form a group under multiplication. A proper ideal 𝔞\mathfrak{a} has no integral ideal 𝔟\mathfrak{b} with 𝔞𝔟=R\mathfrak{a}\mathfrak{b} = R, since 𝔞𝔟⊆𝔞\mathfrak{a}\mathfrak{b} \subseteq \mathfrak{a}. This is why fractional ideals are used. Equivalently, Cl⁡(R)\operatorname{Cl}(R) is the set of nonzero ideals of RR modulo the relation 𝔞∼𝔟\mathfrak{a} \sim \mathfrak{b} if x𝔞=y𝔟x\mathfrak{a} = y\mathfrak{b} for some nonzero x,y∈Rx, y \in R. The class group is trivial if and only if RR is a principal ideal domain.
