Definition

Let σ\sigma be a signature with only function symbols and let XX be a set of variables. An identity, or equation, over σ\sigma and XX is an ordered pair (s,t)(s, t) of terms over σ\sigma and XX, written s≈ts \approx t. An algebra AA of signature σ\sigma satisfies s≈ts \approx t, written A⊨s≈tA \models s \approx t, if sA[α]=tA[α]s^A[\alpha] = t^A[\alpha] for every map α ⁣:X→A\alpha \colon X \to A, where tA[α]t^A[\alpha] is the value of tt. A class 𝒦\mathcal{K} of algebras satisfies s≈ts \approx t if every member of 𝒦\mathcal{K} does.

Remarks

The symbol ≈\approx separates the formal pair from the equality == of elements. As a first-order sentence, s≈ts \approx t stands for the universal closure ∀x1⋯∀xn (s=t)\forall x_1 \cdots \forall x_n \, (s = t), where x1,…,xnx_1, \ldots, x_n are the variables of ss and tt.

Example: the group (ℤ,+,−,0)(\Z, +, -, 0) satisfies x+y≈y+xx + y \approx y + x, since a+b=b+aa + b = b + a for all integers a,ba, b.

Non-example: the same group does not satisfy x+x≈xx + x \approx x. At α(x)=1\alpha(x) = 1 the two sides take the values 22 and 11.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
  • a source with a locator (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
