Inclusion–exclusion formula for elements with none of the properties
Builds on Cardinality of a finite setInclusion–exclusion principle
Statement
Let be a finite set. Let be a set of properties that each element of may or may not have.
For a subset , let be the number of elements of that have every property with . In particular .
Then the number of elements of that have none of the properties in is
Remarks
This is the sieve form of the inclusion–exclusion principle. The sizes are cardinalities of finite sets.
Take to be the set of elements of with property . Then is the size of the intersection of the for , and the formula counts the complement of the union of the in .
