Definition

Let a linear, non-magnetic, transparent medium have relative permittivity tensor Ξ΅\varepsilon, a real symmetric positive definite 3Γ—33 \times 3 matrix. The index ellipsoid of the medium is the quadric {π«βˆˆβ„3:𝐫TΞ΅βˆ’1𝐫=1}.\set{\mathbf{r} \in \R^3 : \mathbf{r}^T \varepsilon^{-1} \mathbf{r} = 1}. In principal axes, where Ξ΅=diag(nx2,ny2,nz2)\varepsilon = \mathrm{diag}(n_x^2, n_y^2, n_z^2), its equation is x2nx2+y2ny2+z2nz2=1,\frac{x^2}{n_x^2} + \frac{y^2}{n_y^2} + \frac{z^2}{n_z^2} = 1, so its semi-axes are the principal refractive indices nx,ny,nzn_x, n_y, n_z.

Remarks

For a unit vector 𝐬\mathbf{s}, the plane through the origin orthogonal to 𝐬\mathbf{s} cuts the ellipsoid in an ellipse. The lengths of its semi-axes are the refractive indices of the two plane waves with wave normal 𝐬\mathbf{s}, and the axes give the directions of their 𝐃\mathbf{D} fields.

Example: for Ξ΅=diag(no2,no2,ne2)\varepsilon = \mathrm{diag}(n_o^2, n_o^2, n_e^2) the index ellipsoid is a spheroid about the zz-axis. The plane orthogonal to zz cuts it in a circle of radius non_o, so light along zz has one index. The plane orthogonal to xx cuts it in an ellipse with semi-axes non_o along yy and nen_e along zz.

Non-example: if Ξ΅\varepsilon has one or two negative eigenvalues, as in some artificial media, the quadric 𝐫TΞ΅βˆ’1𝐫=1\mathbf{r}^T \varepsilon^{-1} \mathbf{r} = 1 is a hyperboloid, not an ellipsoid. The construction needs Ξ΅\varepsilon to be positive definite.

A general biaxial ellipsoid has exactly two central circular sections; the normals to them are the two optic axes.

What this page needs for W1

  • an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)

The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
