Definition
Let be a pointed space, and write for the loop space of a pointed space . The space is an infinite loop space if there are pointed spaces and weak homotopy equivalences
Remarks
The sequence with the adjoint maps is an -spectrum , and is weakly equivalent to its zeroth space . Conversely, the zeroth space of every -spectrum is an infinite loop space.
Example: for an abelian group , the Eilenberg–MacLane spaces satisfy , so with the discrete topology is an infinite loop space with . The check: , which is for and otherwise.
Example: for a pointed CW complex , the space is an infinite loop space, with . By Bott periodicity, is an infinite loop space too.
Non-example: the sphere is not an infinite loop space, and not even a loop space. A loop space is an H-space, and is not one: a cup product computation in rules out any H-space multiplication on .
