Infinitesimal strain theory
Builds on DeformationStrain tensorGreen–Lagrange strain tensor
Definition
Let be the displacement of a deformation of an open set . Infinitesimal strain theory is the approximation valid when for all , in which:
- terms of order two and higher in are neglected;
- the Green–Lagrange tensor is replaced by its linear part, the strain tensor ;
- the reference and the deformed configurations are identified, so material and spatial coordinates are not distinguished.
Remarks
A uniform extension satisfies the smallness condition. Its strain differs from only in the neglected term. A rotation of the body by degrees does not satisfy the smallness condition, since has norm of order . The linear theory would assign it a spurious strain. The smallness of the strain alone is not enough: rotations must also be small.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
