Initial algebra
Builds on F-algebraInitial and terminal objects
Definition
Let be a category and let be a functor. An initial -algebra is an F-algebra that is an initial object of the category of -algebras. That is, for every -algebra there is exactly one morphism with .
Remarks
Example: on , let , and let send to and to . Then is an initial -algebra. Given , the condition on says and , and these equations define exactly one function by recursion.
Non-example: with and is an -algebra but not an initial one. There is no homomorphism from it to : it would satisfy and , which has no solution in .
For an algebraic signature and the functor , the initial -algebra is the algebra of closed terms of .
