Initial algebra semantics
Definition
Let be a signature of function symbols and let be a class of -algebras. An algebra is initial in if for every there is exactly one homomorphism . The term algebra of ground terms is initial in the class of all -algebras. In initial algebra semantics, the meaning of a ground term in a -algebra is , where is the unique homomorphism. Let be a set of equations. The meaning of the specification is the initial algebra of the class of -algebras that satisfy . It is determined up to isomorphism.
Remarks
Since is a homomorphism, , so meanings are compositional. The initial algebra of the algebras satisfying exists: it is the quotient of by the least congruence that contains all ground instances of the equations of .
Example: let with arities , and let consist of and . The natural numbers with zero, successor and addition satisfy . Every ground term equals some by , and distinct numerals are separated in , so is initial among the models of .
Non-example: is not initial in the class of all -algebras. In the terms and are different, but in they have the same value . A homomorphism would send to both terms, so there is none.
The general notion of an initial algebra for a functor contains this one: is the initial algebra of the polynomial functor of .
