Definition
Let be a set, let be a set, and for each let be a topological space and a map. The initial topology on for the family is the coarsest topology on for which every is continuous. Equivalently, it is the topology generated by the subbasis
Remarks
The preimages make each continuous, and any topology that makes each continuous must contain them; this gives the equivalence of the two forms. Universal property: for a topological space , a map is continuous for the initial topology if and only if is continuous for every .
Example: for a subset of a space and the inclusion , the initial topology is the subspace topology. Its open sets are the sets with open in . Example: for a product and the projections, the initial topology is the product topology.
Non-example: the discrete topology on makes the identity map to with its usual topology continuous, but it is not the initial topology for this map. It is strictly finer than needed: the initial topology here is the usual topology, in which is not open.
The initial topology is also called the weak topology or the induced topology for the family.

What this page needs for W1
- an inventory row: the row of the inventory that the node accounts for (0 of 1)
- a source with a locator (0 of 1)
The writing levels say how complete the text of a page is. They do not measure its truth.
